I don’t smoke cigars my friend, but when I do, it’s usually a Swisher, but not NO MORE!!! I’m from Texas, born and raised. We are a state that mainly smokes Swisher Sweets from Big T on Lil Troy’s “Wanna Be a Baller” singing “I got my swisha rolled tight….” to Pimp C in Diamondz and Wood “But niggas be thinkin that a sweet gone get em through my door”, Swisher’s are what I’ve used for blunts. It wasn’t until I moved out of and listened to music from outside of Texas that I learned that everybody didn’t smoke Swisher’s. So with that said I recently tried a fonta leaf by Gold Leaf AU79 ($20). Considering I don’t smoke blunts anymore, I smoke papers, this is a big deal for me. So I was in Houston for the Labor Day Classic (PV U-------Know!!! #HBCUGrad #HBCUAlumni #PrairieViewProducesProductivePeople) and saw Paul Wall (@paulwallbaby) on Instagram talking about these wraps a while back and figured I'd get some to celebrate opening Prairie View's new stadium. So I reached out to Deon The Great (@actaviskid) for mine. He told me it’s a natural leaf, burns slow, no chemical, no glue or anything” and if I had some scissors I might want to use them, as I left he said “this not the type of blunt you gonna roll in the car”. All of this sounded interesting to me.
When I got them back to the spot, I was shocked as how it came; I hadn’t dealt with a tobacco leaf before. It reminded me of being in Puerto Rico at The Cigar House and seeing the process of making cigars. I used a knife and cut off some of the leaf the size of a joint, wasn’t about to mess up a bunch of weed or this leaf. It was tricky at first rolling it (Youtube University got some courses on rolling cigars I’ll be taking…Continuing Education Units), but it came out decent, it reminds me of the cigars/cigarette’s that they would roll in western’s. I did have some problems at first with sealing it, took a lot of licking to finally get it to stick, but Deon's advice of no glue or chemicals came back to me, just took a lil more time and patience. Once I got it all closed up it burned very nice and slow. I was smoking some Gorilla Glue that I had for a while and was starting to not be affected smoking out of my usual papers, but with the AU79, I felt the Gorilla Glue again. I’ve since rolled two more joints and I’m liking them more and more. I like the fact that this product is just the leaf, noting else. It really lets the cannabis speak for itself. I’ll still be smoking papers, but I will be using these from time to time as well, especially with new strains. I like that I’m reminded of Bun B in Diamondz and Wood “Now some of my sweets be tight and some of my sweets be fucked up, but all my sweets gone blow”; I can’t roll them perfectly and never will be because of the wrinkles in the leaf; but that reminds me even more so that this is a natural product. AU79 is not for the casual smoker, I recommend they stick to breaking down cigarillos, this is not for the I smoke reggie every day smoker (although Deon told me that reggie in AU79 ain’t bad, and I can see how) stick to the rillos, and papers. AU79 is for a connoisseur, a person who’ll appreciate the pure wrap and how that makes for a better smoke. This is for a health conscious stoner. This is for a Professional Black Stoner with discerning taste. This Texas stoner’s mind’s been changed Pimp C was right "a sweet ain’t getting you thru my door", but an AU79 will.
